More arrest likely in the case
Chandrapurur, Sept 1: Police have arrested two bookies from Chandrapur city on Monday night in connection with an online betting racket case uncovered by Aheri police in Ashti.
Aheri police in Gadchiroli district busted an online betting racket earlier in July this year. While online gambling is banned in the country, online cricket and card gambling are played on a number of cricket betting sites. This illegal gambling is facilitated with the help of cricket app and its agents deliver the link to the customer through the bookies. User Ids and Passwords like ATM are used for the betting purpose and this illegal betting business have turnover of crores of rupees every day.
Based on the investigation underway since more than a month, Aheri Sub-Divisional Police Officer Amol Thakur and his team is rounding up the agents and bookies involved in the betting racket. However, after getting a whiff of police crackdown on their racket, the agents and bookies have gone underground. SDPO Thakur had earlier arrested 11 accused in the betting racket case. Later more accused were arrested and the list of accused grew up to 25. The accused had filed a pre-arrest bail application in Gadchiroli court but the court granted conditional bail to all the accused. Twice a week, all the accused have to report to Aheri police.
While the investigations continued in the case, Aheri police once again took action and arrested two bookies from Chandrapur in the middle of the night,. The accused is learnt to be identified as Asif Poha and Ashish. Aheri police had even not intimated the local Chandrapur police while it moved into the city to arrest the local bookies in the middle of Monday night.
Number of accused in the case is likely to increase as the investigation progress. There are rumors that Aheri police have built a list of over 100 suspects and accused in this case.
